Luxford Field is a disappointment

The Luxford Field, bang in the centre of Uckfield, should qualify as a Breathing Space but it falls short of being a relaxing place to go for a break from the hurly burly of everyday life, writes The Ambler.

The problem? It is just a field - a bit chopped up because of visits by fairs in muddy weather - edged on two sides by parked cars.

It never crosses my mind to head for the Luxford Field at the end of a shopping stint. That would involve a climb from the High Street and then crossing the car park. Better to head straight home.

I have happy memories of my children enjoying the play equipment and we might have eaten a picnic there in those days.

It is a good venue for the Uckfield Festival Big Day and for occasional fund-raising events - by the Lions Club, Scouts and bonfire society - but for most of the time little is heard about it.

Plans proposed by the town, district and county council hint at a better future - but for now when you want to fill your lungs with fresh air and glory in your surroundings the Luxford Field is definitely NOT the place to go.
