Warning of A272 closure

Warning of A272 closure

Drivers have been warned the A272 will be closed to through traffic during the day for about five weeks from Monday, July 26.

A three-mile stretch of road between Coopers Green, on the outskirts of Uckfield, and Hadlow Down will be resurfaced.

Businesses operating alongside the A272 will be open for business as usual.

A complete new road surface is to be laid over the five weeks. The work make take longer if there are periods of wet weather.

The A272 was badly damaged by the ice and snow of the last winter.

The problem was caused by a cycle of freezing and thawing water, which caused cracks in road surfaces to appear and widen.

Councillor Matthew Lock, Lead Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment, said: "Our roads were badly affected by the severe winter weather earlier in the year, but the programme of essential repairs now under way will mean better and safer roads for residents.

"This is the first time we have put together a two-year improvement programme to help us target the worst roads across the county, and this approach will help us to do the work more efficiently.

"We appreciate roadworks on this scale can be frustrating to motorists and residents, but we will try and minimise disruption. We would ask people to bear with us while repairs and resurfacing are carried out."

The work on the A272 is taking place between 9.30am and 4pm Monday to Friday, and the road will be closed to through traffic between these times.

A diversion is being set up both ways via the A267 at Cross in Hand, the B2192 at Halland and the A22.

Outside of these times the road will be open as normal. All local shops and businesses will be open as usual and access will be maintained for residents and customers. To find out more about this road scheme please phone the local highways office on 0345 60 80 193.
