UCTC could become academy

Uckfield Community Technology College is gathering information about the possibility of becoming an academy - independent of council control.

BBC Sussex reported last week that UCTC had registered an interest in becoming an academy and the college has confirmed it is looking to see whether there is anything beneficial for it in doing so.

"Once we have the information we will share it with all parents, staff, students with our recommendation, either way," said a message to parents.

Mr Geoff Evans, one of the college's deputy principals who answered questions on the issue on BBC Sussex radio said: "It would be difficult to leave the local authority, a good, strong and supportive one, as East Sussex is.

"The government is pushing their programme hard and absolutely no decision has been made.

"The devil will be in the detail and we are simply engaged in an information-gathering exercise."
