Council to consider twinning with French town

Uckfield Town Council is to consider forging twinning links with Arques de Bataille in France at a meeting on Tuesday.

The French town made a twinning request about 12 months ago but the Uckfield council was concerned there was only a twinning with one school and limited other groups.

A report to Tuesday's meeting says it is now understood that other schools around Arques wish to twin with schools in Uckfield and the following organisations are talking to the twinning association with a view to building links:

Grasshoppers, U3A, Rotary, Lions, Uckfield and District Natural History, Catholic Church, Chess, Uckfield Music Club, 10km Run and the Preservation Society.

The reports goes on to say that Uckfield Mayor, Cllr Len Ashby, was very supportive of the Arques twinning link at last year's Festival and invited Arques representatives to a civic reception.

"Whether or not the town council wish to have a formal twinning with Arques ... there is twinning at many levels within Uckfield," said the report.

"On a practical level the town council will from time to time inevitably be asked to host a civic reception for groups arriving from Arques."

Councillors are asked to decide whether to formally twin with Arques because of the various groups wishing to liaise with similar groups at Arques or decide to wait until the groups were more formalised.

They are recommended to host a civic reception when groups come from Arques to Uckfield on an ad hoc basis.
