Hardworking Uckfield volunteer and fundraiser dies

Well-known Uckfield resident Bob Charlesworth who was involved in running the town’s volunteer and information centre and was a member of the United Reformed Church, has died after a long illness.

Mr Charlesworth, who lived in London Road, was 74 and leaves his wife Sheila, daughter Sandra, son David and grandchildren Laura, William and Oliver.

He died on Wednesday, November 9, at the Copper Beech Nursing Centre, in Eastbourne Road. A thanksgiving service is due to be held at the United Reformed Church on Friday, November 18, at 3pm, following cremation at Wood Vale, Brighton.

Mr Charlesworth worked in the electricity supply industry before retirement.

He was a trustee of the volunteer centre with his wife Sheila and helped run regular community lunches for volunteers.

He was also a keen fund-raiser for the United Reformed Church and successful ventures included popular proms concerts at the Civic Centre featuring Uckfield Concert Brass who are due to play at a carol concert at the church on December 11.

Mrs Charlesworth said her husband was a larger than life character and one of the things many people were commenting on and remembering now was his laugh.

“He was a thoughtful person, always ready to help with things. If a job needed doing he would get on and do it,” she said.

Mrs Charlesworth said everyone was more than welcome to attend the thanksgiving service next Friday.

Donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made via Richard Green, funeral director, for the United Reformed Church and Copper Beech Nursing Centre.

Bob can be seen with Sheila in the photograph below which was taken on a family holiday in the Isle of Wight in May.
