Second hand book shop at Bridge Cottage, Uckfield, raises £3,500
More than £3,500 has been raised for charity in the first six months of a second-hand bookshop being run at Bridge Cottage, Uckfield.
The shop was opened by Uckfield Lions on the last day of March in a joint venture with Uckfield Preservation Society. It expanded last month from the small north lean-to shop to include the south room of the cottage.
Their best trading day to date was last month when takings reached £112.12.
An initial donation of books from colleagues in Billingshurst Lions Club provided enough stock for the shop to open but donations of books, DVDs, CDs and jigsaws are now arriving each day.
The Lions are able to collect books within the Uckfield area and they are sold at prices ranging from 50p or 80p with jigsaws from £1.20.
The money raised through the venture is divided equally between the Lions and Preservation Society, which provides the accommodation and pays for the electricity.
Their share of the money will go towards restoring Bridge Cottage, a unique historic Wealden hall house.
The Lions are using their share to support local good causes including hospices, Scout and Guide groups, charities working with the disabled, sports clubs, Uckfield Hospital, the elderly, individual calls for both physical and monetary help, deserving young people in their educational and sporting activities and the Lions International and medical projects.
