Framfield and Hadlow Down pupils help launch annual book awards
Youngsters from Framfield and Hadlow Down primary schools have helped launch the annual East Sussex Children’s Book Award.
The primary pupils gathered at Framfield Primary School and were joined by one of the nominated authors in the Book Award, Gareth P Jones.
Gareth talked to the children about his book ‘Space Crime Conspiracy’, an exciting tale of intergalactic crime.
However, the sessions weren’t just talking shops – Gareth sang and played musical instruments including the guitar and children and school staff joined in.
Organised by East Sussex County Council’s Schools Library and Museum Service, the Book Award initiative runs for six months and includes book talks, book clubs, competitions and author events involving more than 1,000 pupils and 47 schools.
The Awards culminate in June, when the winning author is announced at a special ceremony.
Councillor Bob Tidy, Lead Member for Community Services at the County Council said: “The aim of the initiative is to get more children to read and enjoy books.
"Reading is a key life skill and the more we can do to encourage young people to pick up the reading habit the better. I’m delighted that the Children’s Book Award is again up and running in East Sussex.”
The complete shortlist for this year’s Book Award is:
- ‘The Boy Who Fell Down Exit 43’ by Harriet Goodwin
- ‘The Montgomery Murder’ by Cora Harrison
- ‘Space Crime Conspiracy’ by Gareth P Jones
- ‘Maskmaker’ by Jane Johnson
- ‘Paradise Barn’ by Victor Watson S
