Historic charter to be signed in Uckfield tomorrow
The charter to mark the new partnership between Uckfield and Arques-la-Bataille is ready for signing in the Civic Centre tomorrow, Saturday, June 11.
The charter has been designed and penned by Christina Smith, a calligrapher and heraldic artist, from Nutley, who has hand written it with a broad edged pen using Chinese stick ink and finest gouache, with formal and painted versals for the titles.
It is presented on Sandes Waterford hand pressed paper.
The charter will be signed by John Carvey, Mayor of Uckfield, Maryline Fournier, Deputy Mayor of Arques, David Sudbery Chairman of Uckfield Twinning Association and Laurence Tassus, from the French Twinning Association.
Children from all the local primary schools will take part in the ceremony as well as the Ashdown Singers, Uckfield Concert Brass and local dance troupe Debs Dancers.
The deputy mayor of Quickborn, Uckfield's first twin town, is flying in to attend the occasion.
Links between the two communities have been firmly established over the last few years. School parties from local primary schools have exchanged visits, including a visit from a group of children from Arques to St Phillips last month.
Christina Smith researched the heraldic shields of Uckfield and Arques which are incorporated in the design.
The Uckfield blazon is formally described as “Argent, on a field in base vert an oak tree fructed and leaved proper between two martlets in fesse azure: all within a bordure gobony of the first and last.”
All Uckfield residents are invited to attend the ceremony at 2pm in the Civic Centre.
