Pat on the back for fish and chip shops in Uckfield

Spot checks on fish and chip shops across East Sussex, including Uckfield, show chippies are selling exactly what they say they are.

County council trading standards officers sampled cod from 20 shops at random and sent them to the public analyst for testing. All samples proved to be cod.

Councillor Carl Maynard, Lead Member for Economy, Transport & Environment at the County Council, said “There may be a temptation for some retailers to make a quick profit by substituting cheaper species for cod when selling to their customers whilst also putting their competitors at a financial disadvantage.

"However, our survey appears to show this isn’t happening in East Sussex so it’s a big thumbs-up for our local businesses.

“Whilst the county council would encourage consumers to try alternatives to cod which as a species is believed to be threatened by overfishing; if consumers are asking for cod then that’s what they should get.

"Any offences of substitution detected by the service will be dealt with in accordance with the law which clearly prohibits such deceptions," said Cllr Maynard.

* There have been reports of panga being sold as cold at a Welsh chippy.
