Christmas walks planned in Uckfield

Christmas walks are being organised in Uckfield over the holiday period.

They will take place on Boxing Day, Tuesday, December 27, New Year’s Day and Bank Holiday Monday, January 2.

The historical guided walks will be led by Brian Phillips who created them. He says to be prepared for steps, stiles and mud and changeable weather.

All the walks start and finish at Bridge Cottage, High Street, Uckfield. There are no fixed charges but tips are welcome.

Boxing Day

There are two walks on Boxing Day.

One, called Three Parishes, begins at 10am and looks at how Uckfield, Buxted and Framfield were linked from the Middle Ages, churches, meadows and woods, Hempstead, Buxted Park and views Wood. (5 miles, 2½ hours)

The second walk, To the West: Transport, Industry, Crime, starts at 1.30pm, covers an unfinished railway, Roman road, barges, mill, alehouses and thefts at Shortbridge and the prehistory, landscaping and literature of Lake Wood. (7 miles, 3 hours)

Tuesday, December 27

Again there are two walks on Tuesday, December 27.

New Town and Ridgewood begins at 10am and covers Uckfield’s 19th century growth and the surrounding countryside, Framfield Road, Harlands Farm and Pond, Millennium Green and Boothland Wood. (5 miles, 2½ hours)

Northern Uckfield begins at 2pm and looks at post-war housing covering Roman remains, landed estates and other curiosities. It takes in Pudding Cake Lane, Snatts Road, water tower and Hempstead. (4 miles, 2 hours)

New Year’s Day

The Three Parishes walk, see details on Boxing Day begins at 2pm.

Monday, January 2

The To the West walk, see details on Boxing Day, begins at 9.30am.

The New Town and Ridgewood walk, see details on Tuesday, December 27, begins at 2pm.
