Uckfield church clock to be removed for cleaning this month
The clock at Holy Cross Church in Uckfield is to be removed from the tower this month to be cleaned.
Fund-raising has been going on for years and a final push is under way to raise the last £3,500 which will be spent on re-painting the faded clock faces and re-gilding the hands and figures.
The clock is due to return to its position as the most prominent landmark in Uckfield in July.
By then it will have been fitted with an electric automatic winding mechanism, pendulum regulator and a night silencer.
A team of winders who have climbed the tower twice weekly to re-wind the clock will be able to retire.
The church is seeking sponsors for re-gilding the 48 numerals at £20 per numeral and for the eight hands at £50 per hand.
Donations from the people of Uckfield would be welcome and can be sent to Holy Cross Church, Belmont Road, Uckfield, TN22 1BP.
Thanks to Ron Hill for the pictures of Holy Cross church clock and its workings.
