Uckfield community groups sought to help with town projects

Uckfield Town Council is hoping to encourage community groups to take on projects to enhance areas of Harlands Farm Estate and land in Browns Lane.

The council’s environment committee has considered proposals to improve both sites.

At Harlands Farm they include:

• planting a hedge along the Mallard drive fence,

• establishing beds for plants near the hedge with Harlands Primary School maintaining one of them

• mowing a meandering path along the line of Mallards Drive and north of the beds

• planting native trees along the borders of the path and as far north as is practicable

• planning wild flowers throughout the field

• placing bench/es, picnic tables, a concrete chess table and a concrete table-tennis table in suitable locations among the trees near the drive.

At the land in Browns Lane, at the junction with Downsview Crescent proposals include:

• planting birch trees and wild flowers

• enclosing the plot with a hedge

• refreshing soil in a rockery

• laying a pathway and providing two benches

• in the future adding play equipment and a concrete tennis or chess table.

Minutes of an environment committee meeting, which was held on April 26, said it was noted there was inadequate funding to carry out the work.

It was suggested nearby development could contribute towards the Harlands Farm scheme rather than public money be spent and that setting up community groups for the two sites could provide grant funding.

It was agreed to see whether any neighbouring groups were interested in helping.

The matter is to be returned to the committee for further consideration before the next planting season and budget setting process.
