Bid to have convent building listed
An attempt is to be made to get St Michael's Convent in New Town, Uckfield, listed as a building of special interest.
Members of the town council's plans committee agreed Wealden District Council should be requested to list the building "as a matter of priority".
The town council is also seeking clarification as to the building's heritage as one of the first agricultural and horticultural colleges in the country. Councillors made the decisions when discussing a planning application for the convent site.
The plan is to demolish the convent and nursery school and build a 25-place nursery school, 30 flats and one detached house.
Alterations would be made to the site's access together with a realignment of Old Timbers Lane.
Members of the committee expressed concerns regarding the loss of the convent building which "had a great heritage" and the additional traffic in Old Timbers Lane.
They agreed they could not support the application, which will be determined by Wealden District Council.
