New project to help with reading

Cross in Hand Primary School is taking part in an East Sussex County Council project to provide extra support for children struggling with reading and writing.

A teacher from the school is one of eight in the county being trained at a new Reading Recovery Centre at Eastbourne.

Once trained the teachers will work on a one-to-one basis with four children in a programme of support expected to last 12-20 weeks with a 30-minute session each day.

The design of the Reading Recovery Centre, at Highfield Junior School, enables teachers who are training to observe other teachers working with their individual pupils.

Cllr David Elkin said the centre would equip teachers to provide intensive help to those pupils who needed it. 'It won't only improve their reading and writing, it will also help to improve their self-confidence and self-esteem.'

He added the programme had been used elsewhere in the country and eight out of ten children involved were successful in reaching the levels appropriate for their age.
