Teenagers win £5,000 grant

Participants in the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme at Uckfield Community Technology College have won a £5,000 grant to spend on essential equipment.

The 16-year-olds, who are in Year 11, are working towards their Silver Award and put together the bid with the help of scheme D of E Assistant Leader Keetje Steel.

She was delighted they had received the £4,967 requested and looks forward to buying new tents, rucksacks, sleeping mats, camping stoves and accessories, a laptop, map software and a camcorder, which will benefit everyone doing the Award at UCTC.

“We are very grateful to the East Sussex YouthBank for making the Award,” said Keetje.

“We are particularly pleased to receive it because the application was judged worthy by a group of the participants’ own peers.”

Those who put the bid together were Eleanor Watson, Rebecca Thorpe, Camilla Compton, Emily Elston, Rebecca Walter, Lottie Logan, Kayla Martinez, Robert Williams, Raymond Vincent, Leon Manss, Luke Dunne and Robert Primrose.

The East Sussex YouthBank distributes the East Sussex County Council share of the Government’s Youth Opportunities Fund.
