Uckfield drinking fountain and trough could be refurbished
The idea of renovating a Victorian drinking fountain and trough built in memory of the first rector of Uckfield has been approved in principle by the town council.
The memorial used to be sited on the High Street in the area by Bell walk but is now at the Victoria Pleasure Ground.
It can be seen to your right after climbing Old Timbers Lane.
Deputy mayor Cllr Duncan Bennett raised the matter at a meeting of the town council last week. He suggested refurbishing the fountain and relocating it.
One idea was to place it on the forecourt in front of Bridge Cottage near the original location but there were concerns that the Environment Agency might object and that it might impede events held there.
Another suggestion was to position it in a Civic Square proposed in the town's Master Plan.
While the principle was agreed it was said this could be some time in the future.
The first rector of Uckfield was the Rev Edward Cardale and an inscription on the memorial is says: "Erected by the inhabitants of Uckfield in memory of the Rev E.T. Cardale late rector of the parish April 1894".
