Council threatens to fence Uckfield nature reserve to stop access from gardens
Uckfield Town Council is threatening to fence its boundary of the Hempstead Meadows Local Nature Reserve to stop adjoining residents using gates from their property to get on to the reserve.
Councillors reaffirmed their policy at a meeting in September not to allow access from residents’ properties.
At another meeting last week they expressed disappointment that the reserve’s advisory committee had recommended residents be allowed to apply for a licence to have access gates.
Minutes of the environment and leisure committee which met last Monday, November 1, said: “... disappointment was expressed that the committee has stated that residents be allowed to apply for a licence as it is a council policy not to allow accesses onto its land.
“A letter is to be sent to residents with access gates onto the reserve reminding them of the council’s policy, also stating that if they continue to use their gate the council will fence its boundary."
