Newick at the cutting edge
Grass cutting on roadside verges is in full swing across East Sussex with road safety a key factor in deciding the frequency of cuts.
Contractors usually cut verges in rural areas twice a year but up to five times a year in an urban setting.
Cutting will be more frequent if long grass affects road safety.
Councillor Carl Maynard, county council Lead Member for Economy, Transport and Environment said: “During the spring and summer months, the flowers bloom and plants put on an extra spurt of growth.
“Whilst this is good news for gardeners, faster growing grass and hedges can obscure signs, obstruct pavements or block a driver’s line of sight.
“Our contractors are out there right now tending to the miles of grass verges across the county.”
Verges where there are rare plants are only cut after flowering.
Newick is one of a number of villages and towns in the county where grass cutting is carried out by the parish (town) council on the county council’s behalf.
This allows additional cuts, which can be timed to coincide with local events.
