Uckfield Music Club needs helpers

Uckfield Music Club is under threat of closure if volunteers cannot be found to join the committee.

The annual general meeting of the club, which organises classical music concerts during the summer months, is due to take place on Wednesday, October 20, at Uckfield Civic Centre and an appeal has gone out for more helpers.

Chairman Seymour Weeks has warned that committee membership is below the minimum laid down in the club's constitution:  "... we are out of order, and being a registered charity, this is not acceptable."

In a letter to club members Mr Weeks says: "Put simply, if the committee is not brought up to strength with members who are willing to take a share in the running of our activities then the time cannot be far distant when we shall have little option but to wind up.

He adds: "Did you enjoy this last season's concerts? Would you miss them if we folded? The outcome is dependent on you. Please come to the agm and give us hope for the future."

Mr Weeks appealed through the last season of concerts for people to take over responsibility for the interval wine but says in his letter that nobody has come forward.

He adds two additional committee members are needed and there is an "urgent need" for somebody to take on the role of secretary. His wife, Mrs Pat Weeks, has been doing the job as a stop-gap for two years in addition to her other tasks as a committee member and those tasks are particularly heavy on concert days.

Only last week it was revealed that another Uckfield club, the Uckfield Allotment Association, was in danger of folding because of a shortage of volunteer helpers.

That association holds an extraordinary meeting next month and the question has been asked: "Can the association continue to exist (and in what manner) or should the association be terminated?"
