Council responds to homes idea for horse rescue land, Uckfield
The idea of building new homes on land owned by the Sussex Horse Rescue Trust in Uckfield is being opposed by Wealden Council.
Cabinet member for planning and development Cllr Roy Galley stood by the Local Development Framework being pursued by the council.
He said it had involved a four-year process involving two public consultations, a specific period when representations were invited from anyone who wished to comment upon the council's emerging core strategy, and an appeal to local landowners to identify development sites for consideration.
"I support the aims of charities like the Sussex Horse Rescue Trust, but if they hope to augment their funds through land development, that development must be within the current and future planning guidelines which govern us all.
"Through this careful and open planning process, we have been able to identify areas for development and protection that best meet the aspirations of the public as identified in local initiatives such as the town council's Uckfield Master Plan.
"It is through the gains offered by well-considered planning agreements that we will be able to bring substantial regeneration and benefits to towns like Uckfield including the long-awaited transport improvements."
Later this year the core strategy is to be put to the test through an Examination in Public by an independent Government appointed inspector.
Mr Galley said: "It would be wrong to think we could jeopardise this process or favour some over others through last-minute additions which have not been fully thought out or formally put forward for consideration as part of the consultation process."
A Wealden Council press release said a timetable for the public examination of the core strategy, which was approved by the council last December, would be announced shortly.
The press release said: "The core strategy proposes areas for future housing, business and infrastructure developments which will provide the planning policy framework for delivering housing and other growth in the district up to 2030."
