Plans for new High Street restaurant
A double-fronted shop in the upper part of Uckfield High Street could have a new life.
Two planning applications are before Wealden District Council for 93 High Street, which is next to the Diane Hutt Gallery.
The proposals are to change the use of the shop to a restaurant and/or a takeaway.
The shop has been empty since November 2008 when a kitchen retailer closed.
Attempts to market the shop for retail use have not been successful and the landlord has decided to seek change of use permission to improve the chances of letting the premises.
A report accompanying the application says the shop has been refurbished in an attempt to find a tenant and the rent was dropped by “several thousand pounds per annum”.
The report from Lawson Commercial says “This part of the High Street has very poor footfall compared with below the Church Street junction. Thus it has become an area where specialist retail businesses can thrive and where, traditionally, estate agency and restaurant trades have predominated.”
The applications before the council are for planning permission and listed building permission.
