Council objects to proposals for mounds of waste on Wealden sites
Wealden Council is objecting to proposals which could lead to mounds of waste appearing on designated sites in the district.
The council is particularly concerned about two of the sites, one at Grisling Common, west of Uckfield, and another north of Hailsham because they are close to the flood plains of the Rivers Ouse and Cuckmere.
The objections will go to East Sussex County Council which is consulting on its preferred Waste and Minerals Core Strategy.
Wealden says in a press release that it supports the county's aims to minimise waste wherever possible. It believes more needs to be done to use old quarries and other former mineral extraction areas as sites for landfill waste rather than creating mounds of waste, known as land raise.
'Land raise as a method of waste disposal is simply unacceptable especially in the highly sensitive and treasured environment of Wealden,' said Cllr Roy Galley, cabinet member for strategic planning and housing delivery.
'We are calling on the county council to think again and rule out unequivocally any site that will create an eyesore in this special environment. There are plenty more acceptable ways to dispose of wste.'
