Work progresses on flats

Thirty-nine flats being built on the corner of The Drive and Lealands Drive in Uckfield are due to be completed later this year.

The construction site is dominated by a giant crane which can be seen from all parts of the town and many nearby villages. See how work is progressing in our picture.

This joint project involves Wealden District Council, East Sussex County Council and Saxon Weald Housing Association.

The homes – 29 for rent at affordable levels and ten for purchase on a shared equity scheme – are known as Extra Care flats.

Residents will have their own privacy and front door but personal care will be on hand, if wanted.

There will be a range of communal areas including a restaurant, meetings rooms, hairdressing suite, residents' lounge and an activities centre, but it will be up to the residents to decide how they mix with other residents.

The development is taking place on the site of the former Lealands Court flats which were demolished.

The work is expected is to be completed in the autumn.
