Families raise £400 for the homeless through lights display
Two families who regularly put on a spectacular display of Christmas lights at their neighbouring Uckfield homes raised more than £400 this year for a Salvation Army fund for the homeless in Eastbourne.
The Ensom and Bishop families who live in Browns Lane have been putting up the lights for between ten and 15 years but only thought about collecting money for charity, from people stopping to admire them, about eight years ago.
The most they have raised previously is £280 and they were delighted to collect so much this time.
“We have been overwhelmed with people’s kindness, particularly in these difficult times,” said Martin Enson.
The tradition of decorating the two houses began when Martin and his wife Jacky put up a single string of lights.
Rory Bishop next door, who was a child at the time but in his 20s now, persuaded his parents Bob and Jean to put up a string too and the annual show has grown from there.
Now the families put up a joint display and work together over two weekends to put them up then another two weeks to take them down.
“It’s all Rory’s fault,” said Mr Enson.
