Campaigners who saved land from development plan open day
Campaigners who saved land in Selby Road, Uckfield, from the threat of development are turning it into an area all residents of Uckfield can use and enjoy.
Wild flowers have been planted to help the butterfly population, there's a Bug Hotel, Hedgehog House, Toad Abode and bird boxes.
There's also a pathway through the meadow which can be accessed through a gap between Oakley Court and 48 Selby Road.
"We hope very soon to have a new fence on the boundary with a gated entrance," said one of the campaigners Mr Mark Hallett.
The land has been named Selby Meadow and an official opening day is to be held on April 23 starting at 2.30pm. An Easter egg hunt is being planned for children of all ages followed by a barbecue. There will be gazebos to shelter under.
"Our main objective is to make Selby Meadow a place that is well known and used by all Uckfield residents. The town council will then be more inclined to extend or offer a long term agreement to keep Selby Meadow as green space," said Mr Hallett.
Objectives for 2011 include adding seating, planting more flowers, encouraging local family usage, keeping the meadow tidy and mown but always retaining a meadow-type feel, encouraging dog walkers to clear up after their animals and getting a Selby Meadow sign.
