Police find missing Uckfield woman

Police were carrying out door to door inquiries in The Drive, Uckfield, this morning after a woman was reported missing.

There was police activity in the town centre too and a helicopter from the South East Air Support Unit was called to the area to look for a 71-year-old woman wearing a red coat and black trousers.

The helicopter unit reported later on Twitter that a member of the public rang in with a sighting and  their helicopter kept the lady on camera until the ground unit arrived and took her to safety.

The police said the woman, who suffers from dementia, went missing from her home shortly before 10am.

The helicopter was called to search woodland on the outskirts of town but at 12.30pm a woman driver, who heard the missing woman's description being given to a shopkeeper in the town by a police officer spotted her walking near the A26 to the north of the town.

She was picked up by police and returned home safe and well.
