New plans for land in Newtown, Uckfield
New proposals for developing land on the corner of High Street and Bridge Farm Road, Uckfield, are before Wealden Council.
Two previous schemes for the site, on part of the garden of 1 Farriers Way, have previously been withdrawn, one to build four flats with a commercial unit beneath, and another for four flats without the commercial unit.
The latest is for a three-bedroom house, with two parking spaces, to the east of the site facing the High Street and two single bedroom flats to the western end of the site, facing Bridge Farm Road.
According to planning documents the site is long and narrow and provides a number of challenges. It falls between two retaining walls, is on a slope and overshadowed by the Police Station.
The site would be excavated to a depth just above pavement level and the properties would rise in height as they proceed up Bridge Farm Road.
The house would have three floors and the parking spaces would be under the proposed flats.
“These properties have been designed to be of a similar scale to the surrounding properties so as not to be overbearing or out of place in the existing street scene,” says a design and access statement.
Uckfield Town Council has objected to the planning application on the grounds that it is overdevelopment of the site; out of keeping with surrounding buildings; insufficient parking; concern regarding access/egress due to close proximity of traffic controls; congestion that construction traffic would cause again due to the proximity of the traffic controls and junction.
