Olympic standard shooting facility planned at Fletching
An Olympic standard skeet and trap shooting facility is planned at Northall Clay Pigeon Club, Fletching.
It would be an extension of the existing shooting ground and, according to a document supporting a planning application, would provide “essential professional sports training provision in the run up to the 2012 Olympics, with an ongoing legacy for the sport and centre of excellence”.
Northall Farm has operated as a clay pigeon shooting club since 1986 with the current owner, Dan Kerwood, taking over in 1995.
Dan’s daughter, Charlotte, won Commonwealth Games gold medals in 2002 and 2006.
The discipline in which she won gold has been dropped from the Olympics and Charlotte, aged 24, has transferred to a class which will form part of next year’s London Games.
The new facility at Northall will not only benefit Charlotte but other members of the GB team from the South East and beyond.
“Guy Franklin and Hannah Gibson are both up-and-coming stars currently afflicted by long, arduous trips in order to train," says a document submitted with the planning application.
“In addition to these talented individuals, more established stars of the clay pigeon world would gain from the proposal, for example, Steve Scott and Richard Fouls.
“The new facility would benefit them immensely, eliminating the necessity for them to travel huge distances to continue their development,” says the document.
It points out that Northall Clay Pigeon Club has been a “proactive” member of the community, hosting many charitable events.
Full details of the application, which will be determined by Wealden District Council, can be seen on the council website.
