Wealden phone boxes saved

Efforts to save 36 telephone boxes across Wealden have been successful.

BT advised of their intention to remove 44 payphones but after objections from the district council in 36 cases decided to leave those in situ.

Wealden Council went on to ask English Heritage to list eight of the k6 telephone boxes but in the light of the BT decision the organisation turned down the request.

A comment in a bulletin to councillors said: ‘I hope members will agree that this exercise undertaken by this council has been extremely worthwhile not only to retain the provision of public telephone boxes within Wealden but also to save a number of k6 kiosks which form part of the character and setting of the landscape within this district.’
