Domino's Pizza decision expected
Thirty-one letters objecting to the former Wine Rack in Uckfield High Street being used as a Domino's Pizza outlet have been received by Wealden Council.
Objectors say there are too many fast food, estate agents and charity shops in the town and their views are supported by Cllr Claire Dowling.
According to a report going to the council's planning sub-committee north on Thursday, February 11, she says there are currently 15 take-aways/restaurants in the middle to upper part of the town, of which the vast majority are take-aways and five are for pizzas.
Cllr Dowling also says retail units are decreasing in the town and diversity is being eroded. 'If allowed to continue this will affect the economic vitality of the town. The property has been vacant for only two months over the Christmas period, not an over-long period.'
The recommendation to councillors though is to approve the planning application for number 57 High Street.
The report concludes the change of use to a takeaway 'would not result in disruption of the shopping frontage or inappropriate concentration of retail uses.
It is considered that the use would also make some contribution to the viability and vitaility of Uckfield town centre.
