Young rugby player set to step up

A successful young rugby player from Uckfield, is getting set to make a big step-up in his playing career.

Jamie Bedwell is a member of Brighton Rugby Club Under 12 squad. He is about to leave the world of mini-rugby and move to the youth section as Under 13s.

And the boys are looking for a helping hand from businesses and individuals to help pay for their kit.

This group of players, many of whom have been together since the Under 9 age group, have been county champions in their age group for five successive seasons.

And on the bigger stage they have won a host of festivals including being London Wasps Land Rover Premiership Cup winners at Under 11 and Under 12.

They won the Gulliver's Twickenham Finals as Under 9s.

Lead coach Paul Morley said: “Youngsters travel to us from across the county, not necessarily to win things but to improve as players. We aim to develop the boys’ skills and it just so happens we have been fortunate enough to win some tournaments and festivals as well.

“The boys work hard and respond to the high level of coaching we provide.”

Some of the youngsters are hoping to be able to play rugby professionally when they are older.

There are nearly 50 boys in the age group and as Under 13s will play in the Sussex League next year as Brighton Blues (competing in the A league) and Brighton Blues 2s (competing in the B league but against many club’s A teams).

Sponsorship of £100 will get a boy his kit – shirt, shorts, socks, waterproofs etc.

Details of the sponsor will appear against the player sponsored on the club’s web site – www.brightonblues.com £500 would see the sponsor’s name or logo appearing on every players’ kit – for example, on the shorts.
