Uckfield recovers quickly from disruption caused by snow
The Uckfield area was quickly into its stride today (Monday) despite the wintry weather.
There were two school closures and a couple of others opened later than normal.
On the roads and the rails there were few problems.
Refuse and recycling collections were suspended by Wealden District Council in the north of its area.
The two schools that were closed were Framfield Church of England Primary School and Little Horsted Church of England Primary School. High Hurstwood Church of England Primary School and Uckfield Community Technology College both opened at 10am.
The community college buses ran an hour later than their normal timetable this morning.
The closures and late openings followed snow overnight on Saturday into Sunday when about 80mm fell (3.5inches).
Southern services on the Uckfield railway line ran with a few delays but the 6.34am service was cancelled. Brighton and Hove buses and Stagecoach operated normal services while Countryliner, which serves more rural areas, intended to keep to timetable but warned main roads would be served where minor roads were dangerous.
All main roads were clear of snow.
During the day, the county council roads department warned drivers to take care on country roads. A number of trees had fallen because of the heavy snow.
Reports from readers this morning also indicated few problems on the roads.
Ric Mears said the A272 to Haywards Heath was clear when he went through at 7am.Paul Bray reported the roads all the way from Uckfield to Crawley were clear, "not even slush once you get on the main road, and the Manor Park is pretty clear too". The A272 at Buxted can be difficult in snowy and icy weather but Mark Beesley reported no problems. And Steve Imber wrote on our Facebook page: "Longer queues in Hamburg immigration than anywhere between Framfield and Gatwick!"
East Sussex County Council reported libraries, household waste sites and children's centres in our area open as normal.
Wealden District Council said households should leave refuse and recycling bins out as usual, although collections were starting later than normal.
The council confirmed at lunchtime that refuse collections in the north of the district were suspended with crews helping to clear car parks. If waste and recycling had not been collected, the council says leave it out and they will come round as "soon as conditions allow".
Forecast: Tuesday – remaining cold with the temperature just above freezing.
