Uckfield residents' efforts save land
It looks as if land in Selby Road, Uckfield, has been saved from development.
Planning permission has been given for six houses to be build on the 0.13 acre site but Uckfield Town Council which owns it has been talking to residents who want to create open space there as a public amenity.
Members of the New Town Action Group are willing to meet upkeep expenses and have already spent time and money clearing the site of debris.
A report to a meeting, last night, of the council’s environment and leisure committee said volunteers were willing to pay for a fence, gate and bench.
It added: “It has been made clear that the council cannot guarantee the site will be an open space in perpetuity, and that agreements between residents, and the council will be formal and agreed by the council’s solicitor. This includes the constitution of a proposed “Friends Of” organisation.”
The aim is to plant wild flowers and install nesting boxes and maintain a “natural area suited for quiet contemplation”.
