Shop shutters plan approved

An Uckfield shop can install security shutters to deter potential ram raiders and burglars.

Hardware Goods at 21C High Street has been given planning permission for the work by Wealden District Council.

A council report on the decision states: “The proposed shutters will aid security for the business that could be vulnerable to theft. Such an example would be ram raiding.

“The frontage is open to the road and there is no street furniture (bollards or high kerbs) that would inhibit such incidents.

“The shutters would help secure this local independent business.”

Wealden’s planning department acknowledges that solid shutters do not enhance the character of any high street but says “the need to secure the premises is understood”.

It adds: “On balance the shutters are considered to be acceptable.”

A number of other Uckfield High Street businesses have installed security shutters in recent years, including Corbin’s which is next-door.
