Spending cuts hit council services

Spending cuts hit council services

Spending cuts of £8.4 million have been identified by East Sussex County Council since the Government announced it was cutting grants.

Work has been under way since late May to anticipate the level of cuts needed and a report to a full meeting of the council today, Tuesday, July 20, says it has been able to respond effectively to the challenge but there will be "significant" service reductions.

The report stresses "there remains potential for further cuts either directly on local government or, more likely, as collateral damage from central government departments or partners".

It goes on to say front line "impacts" are unavoidable. Proposals include provision for redundancy and restructuring costs.

"Appropriate communication arrangements have been put in place with staff and partners, especially those directly affected, and as far as possible consultation undertaken, " says the report. Trade Unions were among those consulted.

"The scale of cuts this year is a pointer to an even greater challenge in future years. The in-year cuts to specific grants will continue in future years and will probably increase ..."
