Convent proposals now online

Revised proposals for redevelopment of the St Michael's Convent site in Newtown, Uckfield, can now be seen on the Wealden Council website.

The aim is still to demolish the convent and nursery school, build a 25 place nursery school and provide 30 flats - 21 at the front of the site and nine at the back - and one detached house.

But in the revised plans prominence of the block of flats on Newtown has been reduced with elevations reduced from three storeys to two, with dormers in the roof. The length of the building has been reduced and it has been moved from the junction of Newtown and Old Timbers Lane.

Traffic heading for the church and school would enter the site from New Town High Street but exit via Old Timbers Lane. The lane would be realigned and its junction with Newtown improved.

A gated barrier would separate the residential development from the church and school and direct overlooking of school classrooms and play areas has been avoided.

An additional staff car park with 12 spaces is proposed behind the school.
