Wealden stroke deaths above average for East Sussex
There is a higher level of coronary heart disease than expected within Wealden and death due to strokes in the district are above the average for East Sussex, according to Wealden District Council.
The facts have been released in advance of National No Smoking Day which is on Wednesday, March 9.
It says 18% of adults in the district still smoke and one in ten Wealden mothers are known to be smoking when their pregnancy reaches full term.
The council says heart disease, lung cancer and strokes are just three of the life-threatening diseases linked to smoking.
It adds there's a financial benefit from giving up smoking too: a 20-a-day smoker who pays £6.30 a day for a packet of cigarettes will be £2,299 a year better off if they quit.
Free leaflets offering help and advice on how to quit smoking are available from the council's offices at Pine Grove, Crowborough, and Vicarage Lane, Hailsham.
Information will also be available from leisure centres at Uckfield, Heathfield, Hailsham and Crowbrough.
