Uckfield clock stops for repairs
Uckfield’s Holy Cross Church clock has been dismantled this week for restoration. The clock mechanism will be cleaned and overhauled, a pendulum regulator and a clock-strike night silencer fitted.
The clock will also be converted to auto-winding so the volunteers who wind the clock by hand twice a week can retire.
The Cumbria Clock Company is carrying out the work.
There is an urgent need to have the clock faces restored and re-gilded and to raise the last few thousand pounds, local people are being asked if they would like to sponsor the re-gilding of the numbers and hands on the four faces of the clock.
The church is seeking sponsors for re-gilding the 48 numerals at £20 per numeral and for the eight hands at £50 per hand.
Donations from the people of Uckfield would be welcome and can be sent to Holy Cross Church, Belmont Road, Uckfield, TN22 1BP.
Earlier story on church clock.
Photographer Ron Hill scaled the ladders inside the church to reach the room where Cumbria Clock Company employees Luke Ridge and Dave Clarke were dismantling the clock workings (below). Above: Time stands still - photo again by Ron Hill with his feet firmly planted on the ground.
