Uckfield businesses take part in community toilet scheme
Wealden Council has extended its community toilet scheme to Uckfield but looks set to close public conveniences in six months time.
Toilets open for community use are now available at Limelight, Chilli Peppers Cafe Bistro, The Maidens Head and the Civic Centre.
Facilities for people with disabilities are also available at The Maiden’s Head and the Civic Centre. The Civic Centre also has nappy-changing facilities.
Cllr Pam Doodes, Wealden Council cabinet member for commissioning and assets said: “Businesses taking part in the community toilet scheme are happy to let members of the public use their facilities.
“The scheme extends the choice available for shoppers and visitors to our towns and, as staff are always on hand, they are safer and cleaner than public conveniences.
“By making a small payment to participating businesses, the council can ensure that toilet facilities are fully available during regular opening hours. At the same time we are providing support for the local economy.”
The council says public conveniences will continue to operate in Uckfield for the next six months while the community toilet scheme becomes established.
The council is looking for more businesses to join the scheme, which also operates in Hailsham and Crowborough. Businesses interested should contact Barry Loke on 01892 602626 or email barry.loke@wealden.gov.uk.
