Times for the weekend's Uckfield bonfire and carnival events
More than 3,500 torches have been made ready for this weekend’s Uckfield Carnival.
The fun begins on Friday night with fireworks and continues throughout Saturday climaxing with torchlight processions throughout the evening.
The Holy Cross School field is the place to be on Friday night with the fireworks display due to begin at 8.30pm.
There will be a fancy dress street collection in Uckfield High Street the next day starting at 9am.
The children’s fancy dress procession begins at the Victoria Pleasure Ground at 1.30pm. Taking part will be the carnival prince and princess, Universal Dance Company, the Uckfield Scout Band, Spiritus and Debs Dancers.
The procession goes through the town, up to Southview Drive and then back for fancy dress judging to Holy Cross School Field, or the Civic Centre if it is wet.
The evening’s events begin with adult fancy dress judging in Elizabeth Gardens, Grange Road, at 6.30pm while the tableaux assemble in Bell Lane at 6.45pm.
Torchlight processions begin at Grange Road at 7.30pm.
Last year’s carnival raised more than £4,000 for local good causes. Across Sussex bonfire and carnival societies donated more than £50,000.
Lynne Ireland, chair of the Uckfield Bonfire & Carnival Society, which has been running for more than 185 years, said in this year’s programme: “Keep supporting us to make sure we can continue this tradition for many years to come.”
A list of societies taking part, event times and a list of last year’s Uckfield donations can be found in the programme. If you haven’t already got one they are on sale in town at places including Gale and Woolgar, Martin and Co letting agent and The Flower Shop.
