More seats on Uckfield trains

Peak railway services between Uckfield and London Bridge could have more seats in just over a year’s time.

Rail operator Southern says it will look to provide extra seats by adding carriages to the train leaving Uckfield at 6.30am (arrives London Bridge at 7.44am) and in the evening peak the 5.07pm service from London Bridge (arrives Uckfield at 6.18pm).

It says in its consultation document that there has been a big increase in passengers on the line in recent years.

The extra seats would come from a two-carriage diesel unit currently used on the East Sussex coast route to Hastings and on to Ashford.

Southern is consulting on reorganising its operation along coast and some journeys currently operated as a direct service would in future become two separate services.

The changes would reduce the number of diesel trains the company needs to operate the route.

A final decision on the changes rests with the Secretary of State for Transport. If they are agreed, the changes will operate from December 2010.

* Construction of Uckfield's new railway station has begun. It is due to be completed in February next year.
