Contractor appointed to draw up HQ plans for Wealden Council

Wealden Council is forging ahead with plans for a single-site headquarters at Hailsham.

A contractor has been appointed to prepare a detailed design for refurbishment of its Hailsham offices ready for all staff to be relocated there.

The district council says the move will save more than £350,000 a year and allow significant reductions in travel between Crowborough and Hailsham.

Council leader Bob Standley said: "The refurbished office will make the best use of available space and modern technology and will be a more energy efficient and sustainable building."

He said there would be no cost to the taxpayer because it would be paid for using capital receipts and cash balances held by the council.

The contractor taking forward the design and build approach will be Willmott Dixon.

A formal planning application is expected to be made next month and, subject to permission being granted, building work is expected to start in late spring 2011 with the offices being ready for occupation in late 2012.

During the work there temporary arrangements will be made for relocating staff but there will continue to be a face-to-face presence in Hailsham.
