Children from Uckfield school learn about life as war time evacuees

Memories of the Second World War were recalled for children at Rocks Park Primary School, Uckfield, last week.

Year 6 pupils learned what life would have been like for children during the war.

Mrs Stella Freeman visited and talked of her experiences and memories as an evacuee to Somerset.

She talked about the impact evacuation had upon the children involved.

The Rocks Park children dressed as evacuees themselves carrying cases, gas masks and teddies and wearing hats and labels.

The Evacuee Day was part of a Learning Journey entitled Strictly Evacuees or No Time to Say Goodbye. Pupils listened to songs and music from that era, looked at propaganda posters and will be taking part in a Make Do and Mend day next week.

Thanks to Ron Hill for the pictures. One shows the children in character as evacuees and the other shows how much the same children, still in costume, are enjoying their school day.
