Uckfield school receives chess academy status accolade
Holy Cross School, Uckfield, has been awarded Chess Academy School Status by Sussex Junior Chess. They join just three other schools in Sussex at the present time.
Brian Stockham, lead coach at Holy Cross School for more than 15 years and now Sussex Junior Chess Academy Director for Uckfield and the surrounding area, said: "Holy Cross has had a tremendous record at chess, winning ten county titles at different ages and this year alone has had seven youngsters selected to play for Sussex, with four of them winning medals at national championships.
“This honour from Sussex Junior Chess is much appreciated and indicates much about the excellence of the school .
“As the local Director for development of chess in schools, currently there are eight more local schools making strong progress and there are many activities planned throughout the year to encourage children to rest from interacting with machines and screens and learn to engage peacefully with another child face-to-face in this great brain game.”
