Uckfield GP a thriller
After Saturday’s procession and Big Day (see here and here) Sunday saw plenty of action with Uckfield Lions 10k race and the Rotary-backed electric car Grand Prix.
There were plenty of thrills and spills at the GP.
The day was organised by Rory O'Connor of Uckfield Community Technology College, assisted by the Rotary Club of Uckfield, plus students from the college, Uckfield Guides and Friends of Rotary.
The Red Cross did a great job dealing with a few minor bruises and with the AA in attendance the cars were well looked after track-side.
The Mayor of Uckfield, Cllr John Carvey, with councillor Louise Eastwood worked hard all day supervising the speed indicator device (SID).
The Mayor presented rucksacks to each winning team. He was also responsible for choosing the winning best-decorated car.
The 19 teams each had six drivers with support teams of parents and teachers.
The children had a truly memorable day and the winners ended up rather wet and sticky after shaking up non-alcoholic sparkling wine and fizzing up over each other and their parents in true Grand Prix style.
The prizes at the end of the day were presented by Rotary President Chris Purser who was assisted by Geoff Evans, vice-principal of UCTC.
The winner was Little Horsted school with Fletching second. Additional winners for best paddock display were Rocks Park School and Harlands School winning another prize for their green devil car design.
The crowd gave £128 for the famine disaster in East Africa. The Rotary Club will also give additional money towards a Shelter Box which will provide a ten-person tent, cooking and water filter equipment and other vital items. Thousands of these boxes are being sent by Rotary from the UK to save lives.
Our photographs of the Uckfield GP were taken by Ron Hill with the winners, Little Horsted, immediately below.
