Newly-restored clock is dedicated at Holy Cross Church, Uckfield
The newly restored clock in the tower of Holy Cross Church, Uckfield, was dedicated last week by the Rt Rev John Hind, Bishop of Chichester.
More than 100 people attended the service and light refreshments were provided afterwards at the Belmont Centre, next door.
Former rector, the Rev Brian Wilcox, who arranged the restoration returned to the parish from his Wymondham in Norfolk where he is living during retirement.
The clock was removed for cleaning and overhauling last July. The mechanism was reinstated along with re-painted and re-gilded clock faces.
The clock and chimes have been converted to 'automatic winding'. This means a dedicated team of volunteers no longer have to climb the tower twice a week to wind the clock.
If there is a power failure the whole system will be powered by a bettery back-up system.
The restoration cost in the region of £30,000 and the money was raised with the help of donations, many anonymous, and sponsorship. There was the opportunity to sponsor a clock face numeral, re-painting of a clock face or re re-gilding of a clock hand.
In our pictures, below, taken by Ron Hill, the Rt Rev John Hind can be seen dedicating the Holy Cross Church clock and posing for a photograph with, from the left, the Rev Stephen Date, churchwarden Mrs Margaret Phillips, churchwarden Mr David Youngman and the Rev Brian Wilcox, former rector at Holy Cross.
