South Downs Youth Orchestra performs in Uckfield
The South Downs Youth Orchestra performed at Uckfield Civic Centre on Friday evening.
Soloists Lizzie Bolton, flute, and Alice Kirwan, harp, are pictured below with conductor Malcolm Warnes and Uckfield Mayor Cllr John Carvey.
The orchestra is open to young musicans who have achieved Grade 6 or above for an orchestral instrument. Professional coaching is given to all sections.
Concerts are given each year to audiences in the Eastbourne, Uckfield, Crowborough and Lewes areas.
The South Downs Youth Orchestra was one of only four youth orchestras nationally to be invited to perform in the Society for the Promotion of New Music's 50th anniversary having had a new, specially commissioned piece written for it.
On Friday they performed another new work, On Windover Hill, written for them by composer Tony Biggin. Also on the programme was Mozart's Flute and Harp Concerto, Mendelssohn's Midsummer Night's Dream Overture and the first movement from Schubert's 9th Symphony.
