Uckfield church celebrates centenary of organ
The centenary of the organ at the United Reformed Church (URC) in Uckfield was celebrated on Saturday.
Nine organists played during the afternoon to showcase different aspects of the instrument.
The organ was one of two built by Mr T. Brookes who had a music shop in Uckfield at the turn of the 19th and 20th Century. The other is at Holy Cross Church.
The organists from both churches were at there to play a duet. Dorothy Maxwell of the URC and James Thomas of Holy Cross are pictured right.
Broadcaster John Marsh who is from Buxted, pictured above, played music by Christopher Tambling.
Other organists who played for the occasion were Valerie Banks, John and Nicola Corrie, Barry Richardson, Dr David Shuker and Derek Thorogood.
Clive Cooper, accompanied by Colin Tarn on piano, sang three songs and recalled his time as a choir boy, then singer with the church choir for many years.
A piece of choral music written by Dorothy Maxwell and Kath Ovens was sung by an augmented choir and the Rev David Witts, minister at the URC, led an act of thanksgiving.
